The glass domed roof of East Wintergarden is one of the most instantly recognisable silhouettes in Canary Wharf. It was designed in 2011 by César Pelli and echoes the art-deco inspired construction of his earlier Winter Garden, built in 1988 for New York’s World Financial Center. Named one of the ten most influential American architects by the American Institute of Architects, Pelli is known for his evolution of skyscraper design and experimentation with stainless steel.
The venue’s twenty-seven-metre high domed glass ceiling epitomises Pelli’s architectural language. With a fully open interior layout, uninterrupted by columns or loadbearing walls, the remarkable glass-vaulted roof provides the focal point of the Main Hall. The interior features beech-panelled walls and a unique coloured marble floor that mirrors the geometric patterning of the steel and glass structure.
